Hakalau Wildlife Refuge

YCC members will help improve the condition of the surrounding high elevation forest.

These forests serve as habitat to many of Hawaii’s endemic forest birds, many of which are in critical condition. Projects include invasive plant removal and planting of native trees. YCC members will partake in bird watching hikes, data collection, and learn about native plant propagation at the greenhouse. Some bird species that students will have an opportunity to see and learn about include the ‘i’iwi, akiapola’au, ‘io, Hawaii creeper, oma’o, ‘apapane, ‘elepai’o and akepa.
